What All Successful M&A Deals Have in Common

What All Successful M&A Deals Have in Common

Peter J. Boni

Senior Advisor, Author, Speaker, Director, Investor, Former Science & Technology CEO

Why do many M&A transactions fail after the deal? Why do so many deals fail to get done in the first place? It may be because the acquiring company and the business targeted for acquisition aren’t a good fit, either culturally or operationally, or for any number of other reasons. In other words, some businesses simply are not meant to be combined. On the other hand, what is the secret to success for those business acquisitions that do work? Why do some businesses go on to great success after they have been sold? Find out when Jeff Allen visits with business advisor Peter Boni, author of the new book “ALL HANDS ON DECK: Navigating Your Team Through Crises, Getting Your Organization Unstuck, and Emerging Victorious.”

Guest Profile

He formed Kedgeway as a platform to write, consult, speak, teach, invest, direct my philanthropy and sit on a board or two after 30+ years as a science & technology CEO, consultant, director and investor, resulting in ~$5B of incremental value. Ernst & Young twice recognized him in their Entrepreneur of the Year competition, most recently in 2011 as Master Entrepreneur in Philadelphia.

His book, ALL HANDS ON DECK: Navigating Your Team Through Crises, Getting Your Organization Unstuck, and Emerging Victorious, was published by Career Press in June 2015. It’s performing in the top 10% within its category.

He retired from Safeguard Scientifics after 7+ years as CEO, where he assembled a terrific team to reposition the near-death NYSE-listed venture capital holding company post Internet bubble. With top tier returns, net cash achieved a 60 year historical record, SFE stock hit a decade high; volume increased 6X; covering analysts grew from 1 to 7; and SFE way outperformed the Russell 2000 and the S&P 500. It was a good run.

Previously, he was an Operating Partner with global private equity leader, Advent International, and a CEO for several high tech companies (public, private, IPO) in various stages of growth, maturity, trouble and renewal. Earlier, he held Fortune 500 executive assignments.

His two dozen director’s experiences, including a few in seismic shift, ranged from $10MM to $1B on public and private technology, health care, financial and non-profit boards as chairman, independent director, committee head and/or CEO coach.

He earned an “Adversity MBA” on a full scholarship, courtesy of Uncle Sam. Throughout his business career, he have used the many lessons of leadership through adversity that he took away from a life-altering 15 month combat experience as a Special Operations Infantry Officer to never underestimate the importance of attracting, retaining and rewarding well-trained, capable people who can think out of the box, navigate complexity and work as a team.
