Doing Business As (DBA)

A fictitious business name, which allows a company to do business under a different name than the name of its legal entity.

Example

The company name may be Acme Incorporated, but the company does business under the name Acme Hot Dogs.

Tips

Assumed names (DBA) are filed at the state, city, or local level using a fictitious business name statement (FBNS). Jurisdictions require that entities identify the responsible party for an assumed name so the public knows who can be held responsible for acts of the business using the assumed name.
